“Artists’ Cooperative Gallery Members, Associates and Friends Show”

Opening Reception: Wednesday, Febraury 1, 2012

Time: 5PM - 8PM

Show Dates: Febraury 1, - March 3, 2012

Location: The Hoxie Gallery, Westerly Public Library, 44 Broad Street, Westerly, RI

Is it physically possible to be in two places at one time? The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly hopes so.

Artwork by members of the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery, Associates and friends will be exhibited in a new show opening February 1 at the Hoxie Gallery in the Westerly Public Library. The Hoxie Gallery recently re-opened after nearly two years of extensive library renovations, and is one of the premier galleries in the region.

At the same time during the monthly Art Stroll, at the other end of downtown, the Artists’ Cooperative is having an opening reception for its February show “URI Students and Alumni” at its gallery at 7 Canal Street. Is this coincidence? Or is it destiny?

As the Artists’ Cooperative begins to celebrate its 20th year in Westerly, founding member Sandi Gold remembers how the Artists’ Cooperative, and the Art Stroll, came to be. “Back in 1992, there was no arts organization in Westerly where artists could show their work. Most of the storefronts in downtown Westerly were empty. The late Bruce Goodsell, Ginger Mitchell and I wanted people in Westerly to have a place to see and buy our artwork. So we approached our landlord, Bill Griffin, who generously let us have a small room to get our Cooperative going at no cost at all for six months! Then, as we became more successful and had more members, he gradually raised the rent to what we could afford. At the same time, the library had a really wonderful large room that was being used as a storage space. Webster Terhune was working very hard to turn it into a gallery. We met and joined forces, so shortly after the Cooperative Gallery opened, Terhune and I started the Art Stroll so people could go from the Library's gallery to the Cooperative Gallery.”

Enjoy 2-D art ranging from vibrant oils by Carey Williams and watercolors by Oliver LeBras to black and white photography. A variety of 3-D work from Mary Anne Sherman’s intricate silver jewelry to Betsy Cameron Fine’s organic ceramic sculptures will also be displayed, as well as works by other Coop members, associates and friends in a variety of media.

And while you’re enjoying the Art Stroll, don’t miss the Opening Reception for February’s “URI Students and Alumni” show – Community creating art as art creates community, at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery at 7 Canal Street, also from 5 – 8PM. Work by Cooperative Gallery artists will also be on display.

More special events celebrating the Coop’s 20th Anniversary to come.

Both the Hoxie show and the Artist Coop shows opens as part of the monthly first Wednesday night Art Stroll held in downtown Westerly and Pawcatuck, when shops, artistic venues and restaurants will be open.

The Hoxie Gallery is located at 44 Broad Street in downtown Westerly, RI.
