Does a community create art? Or does art create a community?

Discover for yourself - as you discover emerging artists at the ‘URI Student and Alumni’ show, this month at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly.

Come meet the young artists at the show’s Opening reception, Feb. 1 from 5 to 8 pm.Some of them have already exhibited. Others are still trying to find their identities as artists. Their wide range of backgrounds and interests is visible in their wide range of work. But one thing they share is the fellowship of art.

Come see their vivid paintings, powerful prints, imaginative sculpture, photography and more. Encourage a young artist. Be inspired. And become part of this vibrant fellowship of art, shared by the URI students, alumni, artists of all kinds, and those who appreciate the arts.

As the Cooperative begins its 20th year of sharing art with the community in Westerly, we welcome this opportunity to help introduce this new generation of students’ work to the wider community. In a web message from Bob Dilworth, Chair of the URI Department of Art & Art History, he writes about the ways the department helps students explore art and their own artistic potential. In addition to smart classroom and studio experiences supported by a variety of state-of-the-art multi-media technologies, his students are exposed to the larger art community in many ways. We’re proud to be a part of the process. And hope that you will be part of it, too.

The show also features work by Artists’ Cooperative members in media ranging from paintings and photography to ceramics, jewelry, glass and textiles.

During the Art Stroll, don’t miss the opening of February’s show at the Hoxie Gallery, "Artists’ Cooperative Gallery Members, Associates and Friends." The Hoxie Gallery is located on the second floor of the Westerly Public Library at 44 Broad Street in downtown Westerly, RI. For more information visit www.westerlylibrary.org or call 401-596-2877.

Both the Hoxie show and the Artists’ Cooperative shows open as part of the monthly first Wednesday night Art Stroll held in downtown Westerly and Pawcatuck, when shops, artistic venues and restaurants will be open.
